Strain Partitioning and Interseismic Fault Behavior Along the Caribbean‐South American Transform Plate Boundary

چکیده

We combine Global Positioning System and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data to characterize the interseismic behavior (i.e., locked or creeping), strain partitioning for faults along Caribbean-South American transform plate boundary. Interseismic is distributed mainly on three faults, San Sebastian, El Pilar, Central Range but occurs across multiple in west (San Sebastian La Victoria faults) east (Sub-Tobago Terrane, Range, South Coast faults). In northern Venezuela, slip partitioned (16.4 ± 1.7 mm/yr) (4.3 0.9 faults. north-eastern Pilar fault accommodates at a rate of 18.6 1.8 mm/yr. Trinidad Tobago, between Sub-Tobago Terrane (3.0 0.1 mm/yr), (14.5 2.0 The Victoria, western segment, are depths 16.2 4.0 km, 7.7 5.2 6.7 2.8 8.0 0.2 respectively. eastern segment all creep. Our new InSAR results indicate that entire Fault creeping. this boundary capable producing Mw 8 earthquake, which significant finding regarding seismic hazard risk.

Strain Patterns and Strain Accumulation Along Plate Margins

Observations of strain accumulation along plate margins in Japan, New Zealand, and the United States indicate that: 1) a typical maximum rate of secular strain accumulation is on the order of 0.3 ppm/a, 2) a substantial part of the strain accumulation process can be attributed to slip at depth on the major plate boundary faults, and 3) some plastic deformation in a zone 100 km or more in width ...

High-resolution interseismic velocity data along the San Andreas Fault from GPS and InSAR

[1] We compared four interseismic velocity models of the San Andreas Fault based on GPS observations. The standard deviations of the predicted secular velocity from the four models are larger north of the San Francisco Bay area, near the creeping segment in Central California, and along the San Jacinto Fault and the East California Shear Zone in Southern California. A coherence spectrum analysi...

Tide gauge records of uplift along the northern Pacific-North American plate boundary, 1937 to 2001

[1] Vertical crustal motions at 15 sites along the northern Pacific-North America plate boundary are determined using relative sea level changes from tide gauge records. Our analysis is based on monthly mean sea levels, from which barometric pressure and seasonal effects are removed. The records are corrected for common-mode oceanographic variations. These records are statistically examined for...

Post-seismic and interseismic fault creep II: transient creep and interseismic stress shadows on megathrusts

S U M M A R Y We use idealized subduction megathrust models to examine aseismic, frictional fault creep throughout the interseismic period. We consider rate-dependent and rateand state-dependent friction. When there is significant post-seismic creep surrounding locations of coseismic slip, the creep rates surrounding an asperity may be lower than the plate convergence rate late in the seismic c...

InSAR observations of strain accumulation and fault creep along the Chaman Fault system, Pakistan and Afghanistan

We use 2004–2011 Envisat synthetic aperture radar imagery and InSAR time series methods to estimate the contemporary rates of strain accumulation in the Chaman Fault system in Pakistan and Afghanistan.At29Nwefind long-termslip ratesof16 ± 2.3mm/yr for theGhazabandFault andof8 ± 3.1mm/yr for the Chaman Fault. This makes the Ghazaband Fault one of themost hazardous faults of the plate boundary zo...
